ALYOF--January Goal

I struggled with this decision a bit longer than I should have.  Last month when I took my sewing machine in for servicing, I was able to clean and organize.  One of the things I did was make a list of projects-in-progress.  Just from the various stacks on my desks, I made a list of 17 projects.  That doesn't count the bins of projects awaiting further love.  Haven't counted the projects in there, but I would guess that would add 5 to 10 more to that list.

That said, I chose another project on my want-to-do list that has become a priority.  My poor old ironing board needs a new cover.  I've had this ironing board since I got married almost 22 years ago now.  It squeaks (maybe I need to get out the WD-40 this month, too) with every move the iron makes and the original cover has definitely seen better days.

As you can tell, there are nicks from when the rotary cutter ran over the edge of the mat.  (From the days before I had a sewing table.)  There is no padding to speak of and the metal structure has burned through.  Sometimes this lovely netting design shows through onto the pieces I'm pressing, but I always have to look at the permanent burn marks.

Last year I won a FQ bundle of Joel Dewberry's Notting Hill.  I love the fabrics, but really had no idea what to do with them ... until now :)  I'm looking forward to piecing a cover using a Cotton Way pattern that I have.  Here's to one fabulous finish in 2014!

Linking up to A Lovely Year of Finishes.

  1. My cover is looking pretty shabby, too, and I've been thinking of making one...we'll see how that goes! Looks like some beautiful fabric in that FQ bundle!

  2. That is going to be one awesome cover, I love that fabric line! I was thinking about making an ironing board cover, do you think that having seams in the cover will impact the ironing?

  3. haha My cover is bad also and I just throw a tea towel over it when not one but 2 irons went bad this last year. A friend gave me a vintage non steam iron and it makes everything scorched but I love it. (No holes and steam drips) However my tea towel that was white is almost orange from scorch marks. I might construct a whole new iron surface this year. I have a piece of ply wood and I should go look for some legs and make a rectangle surface that is bigger than a regular ironing board. What do you think?
Good luck with your first project!

  4. Great idea - that will make a colorful bit in your sewing room! My cover has a rip and some burn marks and could use a good update, too. Maybe if I find something pretty with my Joann's coupon this weekend!

  7. You've used the same cover for 22 years???? Wow, you are Scots! I change mine every year - well, I don't actually change, I just add a new one. My mother and grandmother never took the old one off, just added more on top, and it makes it so cushiony after a while! Your fabrics are perfect for a cover. I look forward to seeing it finished at the end of the month!

  12. Wow, 22 years?! I'm not even 30 and I've had a handful of different ironing boards in that time, let alone the covers haha! My husband made me a pressing station recently and it's great; makes ironing almost fun so i bet a new cover would have a similar effect!!
