This week marks the final <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/project-quilting" target="_blank">Project Quilting</a> challenge for the year. I’ve been wanting a small pincushion to go next to my machine but I’ve been putting it off. I’ve never made one and I have no idea why I was so intimidated. Coming in at 3”x5”, it’s the perfect size to sit at the side if my machine. And the colorful scrappiness makes me smile! It fills the bill for vibrant and vivacious for me.</div>

This week’s challenge from <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/" target="_blank">Kim</a> at <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/project-quilting" target="_blank">Project Quilting</a> was a timely one.<a name='more'></a> In the week before it was given, I read <a href="http://www.happyquiltingmelissa.com/2020/02/little-lou-quilts.html" target="_blank">this post</a> from Melissa at <a href="http://www.happyquiltingmelissa.com/" target="_blank">Happy Quilting</a>. I was, of course, charmed by the quilts in her new book but even more than that by the quilt drive for babies. <script async="" data-pin-hover="true" data-pin-shape="round" src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js" type="text/javascript"></script><br />

Once again, I briefly set aside the wedding quilt in order to pull together a larger-than-planned side project for PQ. Inspired by one of Melissa Corry’s quilts, I adapted this to fit the size requirements for <a href="https://loulousfabricshop.com/pages/little-lou-quilts" target="_blank">Little Lou Quilts</a> and that is where this darling little quilt is headed.</div>

This week I’ve had so many meanings of “fly” going through my brain thanks to the latest <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/2020/02/11-4-birds-in-the-air-challenge-4-of-project-quilting-season-11.html" target="_blank">Project Quilting challenge</a> from <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/" target="_blank">Persimmon Dreams</a>. I started off with this vintage quilt as my inspiration piece. Isn’t it cool? It looks like it could be a modern quilt. </div>

Growing up, we had little parakeets as pets among the zoo of reptiles. I always loved how colorful and perpetually happy they are. We would let them fly around the house and they would land on my shoulder and just chatter away sometimes. I wonder if the thrill I get on a good roller coaster even compares with that feeling of fluttering or gliding through space like a bird.</div>

Then there’s the tin can flying—airplanes! I’m so grateful to be able to travel such crazy distances so fast. As a kid it was always a treat to fly to SLC to visit family in the summer. Grandpa always seemed to be able to sneak out on the tarmac and surprise us as we walked to the terminal. Last summer I was able to fly to the east coast to spend time with the boy and my sisters. Such a blessing!</div>

All this thinking of flying led me to thinking of how we all fly in some way. We all have strengths and when we come together and share those strengths each of us may fly, but together we soar!</div>

Quilt deets: Made from scraps, including the binding. Used my plain white Aurifil thread for piecing and quilting. Finishes at 40”square, backed with super-soft milky (yuck to work with!) The gray HSTs are leftovers from Sams wedding quilt.</div>

I had visions of turning this into a baby quilt. But I had to get real. I'm working on another, very large quilt that has priority right now. So I finished my first block into a simple pillow. I was even pleasantly surprised to find this fun hot pink heart fabric in my 5" strip stash that was the perfect compliment to the bold colors on the other side!</div>

This week's project can to me pretty quickly. I've been wanting to make these,</div>
<a name='more'></a> but unsure of fabric choices. These are my Alma mater's colors and also the colors for my kids' high school. It's made from scraps from Sam's graduation dress that I made for her and Nick's trek quilt (that still needs to be quilted...) I made bias binding for the second time; it did not go well, but it's done. Thanks <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/2020/01/teamcolors.html" target="_blank">Project Quilting</a> for a bit of motivation!<br />

This weeks project idea came easily to me for once. Which was awesome cause the simple execution turned out to be quite a pain. I actually ended up doing the stippling three times before I called it good enough. After changing the needle, the thread and the tension, I gave up and took my machine in for servicing, so the binding I finished by hand--which I really did enjoy.</div>

This past year has been one of particular change and growth for me. A lot of that started in January when my boy enlisted. I had him for 6 more months before I watched him walk away to embark on his chosen path. I miss him every day. For me, this is a reminder of how far we've both come in a year--in so many ways.</div>

<br />
Well, I didn’t quite finish my goal for last month. Almost, but not quite. It’ll keep a bit longer ... this month I turn my attention back to this t-shirt quilt that keeps getting sidelined for other squirrels.<br />
<a name='more'></a><script async="" data-pin-hover="true" data-pin-shape="round" src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js" type="text/javascript"></script><br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaSVj4FeviE0EA6z3r6-KseJx6PQ_i0dWGr-SImJ5xP3q05dQEMXaCOQWdIuZpH6YIMvxgiLK6HrogUyr9tclrNKE-tkIsI-YOzfHHCSELcBsV-84tQOyoA3_4DlPRJp1aA-tZDpkZwx3y/s1600/OMG1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1250" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaSVj4FeviE0EA6z3r6-KseJx6PQ_i0dWGr-SImJ5xP3q05dQEMXaCOQWdIuZpH6YIMvxgiLK6HrogUyr9tclrNKE-tkIsI-YOzfHHCSELcBsV-84tQOyoA3_4DlPRJp1aA-tZDpkZwx3y/s320/OMG1.jpg" width="250" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I want to finish it for a very special occasion that is coming up at the beginning of May, so to the top of the list it goes. I have to unpick one seam, but it should all move forward from there. Once the sashing’s are done, I’m planning on two simple borders, then some very simple quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpG-4j1iTNd5ERD9xCyxp4t74dp2aRbvx_U6Z2493INFmrUdNA0DJXPepkCBEWBuk5_4mh29zkpWhtMXPBT4InWNdYis_EmSypovAPSZpfxkZFwvttbmGo4je_HqLCRdmLioNDzMNBNIkC/s1600/OMG2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpG-4j1iTNd5ERD9xCyxp4t74dp2aRbvx_U6Z2493INFmrUdNA0DJXPepkCBEWBuk5_4mh29zkpWhtMXPBT4InWNdYis_EmSypovAPSZpfxkZFwvttbmGo4je_HqLCRdmLioNDzMNBNIkC/s320/OMG2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So, for my OMG, I have 1-1/2 of the 3 rows of sashing to finish. After that, two simple borders and the quilting which is a little daunting because this is shaping up as the largest quilt I'm quilting on my little Janome to date. Not sure how that'll go, but I have some ideas, at least =)<br />

This week I spent working on the final challenge for Project Quilting this year. I'm happy with the way my little mini turned out! I'm especially pleased that all my projects came from my scrap bins!!<br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
I decided to make my project based off of another mug rug I made as a gift. While I'm a big fan of chocolate, I'm not a big fan of browns. However, two big projects over the last couple of years left me with a lot of chocolate scraps. It was surprising to pull it all out and realize I had more than enough to work with. Woo hoo!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6cfgBBdHMxqR17WHcDaxVGNZdosoPGNXpjXdWUkhTsnVd0NqtxmZQn9hSXRZhGMSu0EnEsL4qYYpS4qXMS0pwYBHBj2Q2G9WtwHFIUfUvlntSpGIYW48zG8i9CWw7XsYiTrBE-Z0C4VOD/s1600/PQ10-6c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1351" data-original-width="1600" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6cfgBBdHMxqR17WHcDaxVGNZdosoPGNXpjXdWUkhTsnVd0NqtxmZQn9hSXRZhGMSu0EnEsL4qYYpS4qXMS0pwYBHBj2Q2G9WtwHFIUfUvlntSpGIYW48zG8i9CWw7XsYiTrBE-Z0C4VOD/s320/PQ10-6c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I modified one of the mugs from Kate Spain's <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fp_in-from-the-cold.pdf" target="_blank">In From the Cold</a> pattern. I chose green hi-lites, because, well, what's better than minty chocolate? It finished at about 14" x 16", so a little big, but still perfect for my little snack tray.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4z3CiB_P6TqumHopfSAtIKpES3oqwOETppc2IY3DfsVWjQjNUlzFRC4aRyUDBHRTQtJCytPX1eVn9Dvvu9IEsrrVJYyhcoC7LAnsMyZA4DKUYHz4ckoDnSyzI5bh7uzDrn8mI7KoQIoJ0/s1600/PQ10-6d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1540" data-original-width="1600" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4z3CiB_P6TqumHopfSAtIKpES3oqwOETppc2IY3DfsVWjQjNUlzFRC4aRyUDBHRTQtJCytPX1eVn9Dvvu9IEsrrVJYyhcoC7LAnsMyZA4DKUYHz4ckoDnSyzI5bh7uzDrn8mI7KoQIoJ0/s320/PQ10-6d.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This time around I even practiced some FMQ. Haven't done that in a really long time. I figured out that it was actually easier if I go a little faster. Still has some tension issues, but they don't show if I use the same color top and bobbin threads. </div>

This weeks challenge was a fun one! I love words and I’m always getting punny jokes from Sarah. When Moda first released their Spell It! alphabet, I downloaded it all and played with ideas. Then when Lori Holt published <i>Spelling</i> <i>Bee</i>, that was even better with upper and lowercase possibilities.<br />

One idea I’ve had is based on the word bubble mini in <i>Spelling</i> <i>Bee</i>. I knew I wanted to make one to hang over my bed—with a few modifications. The abecedarius challenge was the perfect opportunity to make this happen!</div>

I present to you “Sweet Dreams”. It finishes quite a bit larger than I thought at 45” x 32-1/2”. By Wednesday Sarah was claiming this for her room, saying that it just speaks to her on so many levels. 😂 That gave me the inspiration for quilting the simple wavy lines; it reminds me of water and swimming. I really like that Michael Miller newspaper print I found for the backing.<br />

It is quilted with a silver-gray Aurifil (2600). For the first time I used a different top and bobbin threads on the binding so it didn't show up on the front or back.</div>

<br />
This month I was inspired to pull out my <i>Words to Live By</i> quilt. Moda’s latest challenge stems from their Spell It! alphabet. It originally debuted several years ago and there are lots of gorgeous versions for inspiration.<br />
<a name='more'></a><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Long ago I opened and sorted a jelly roll of Kate Spain’s Cuzco to go along with my own version. I simply chose seven words and ideas that have meaning for me. Nothing magic about that number, it’s just what felt right after my brainstorming session.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-a6J-OGskzH2r-vI1DicYwS9nHDivKYwsc4-bqIdtm0678Ufw1Oo_Uu1DRe7aaPIGS0rBMw9yNmlFVT9ksTqwi140i8khyphenhyphenQIxBYbUUh88SJNRFtadLyALKatD4am49fFLxS7t2-tD4ep6/s1600/OMGoal2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1144" data-original-width="1600" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-a6J-OGskzH2r-vI1DicYwS9nHDivKYwsc4-bqIdtm0678Ufw1Oo_Uu1DRe7aaPIGS0rBMw9yNmlFVT9ksTqwi140i8khyphenhyphenQIxBYbUUh88SJNRFtadLyALKatD4am49fFLxS7t2-tD4ep6/s320/OMGoal2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once I sorted, I realized that there were six colors in the collection, and the rest of the strips are mostly white. That led me to the decision to reverse one of the rows, so instead of colored letters with a white background I’ll do a colored background with (mostly) white letters. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div>
Just last week I found the perfect color for the reversal: Kona Bright Periwinkle. I saw this at my LQS and when I brought it home and laid it with my bundles strips, I knew it was inspired! Now I am so excited about this project again!</div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div>
I’ve made the letter blocks for three words, so there’s a bit more piecing to go. My goal this month is to finish piecing this top.</div>

Whew! I'm SO happy to have this finished. It's literally been hanging in my sewing area since 2011. 8 years! Really since before I learned how to quilt. How did I let it sit for that long?!?<br />
<a name='more'></a><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I started this for Sam when she was in 8th grade. She was in her theater class production of <i>A Midsummer Night's Dream</i>. I remember we ended up buying a purple dress that was very similar to this one. Not really sure why it was set aside.</div>

When I dug into what was left, I found the lining that also needed hemming as well as some stains that needed to be hidden in the fold-over of the hem. Just means it's about an inch shorter than originally intended.</div>

This week's challenge was just that for me. I struggled a bit with what I wanted to do. It went through several permutations before I started piecing.<br />

<div>
It is also the first time I tried a rainbow progression. I'm a little sad it looks more like a hashtag than the sawtooth star that I started with, but I'm very excited that I was able to finish this 36" square quilt! This is my third challenge in a row that I've been able to work exclusively from my stash. Most of these little squares bring to mind other quilts I've made. So fun!</div>

Once again coming from the trying-to-snow Willamette Valley. I had several ideas for this Bigger Than a Breadbox Challenge. It's funny how a minimal size restriction also seemed to restrict my thinking outside the box.<br />

I realized about Wednesday that I had a project that I had just bought fabric for that would have fit the bill, but I was thinking "mini" so overlooked it since it's a baby-sized project. Oh, well! It's still there. I'll get to it soon, hopefully =)</div>

Using some shirting scraps from my sewing stash for the backing, I had them quilted and trimmed by Tuesday evening ... and there they languished until yesterday. I also found some solid red that was just enough to bind them all in my leftovers box. I love using what I already have!<br />
<br />
Each one finishes at 17-1/2" x 12-1/2". These are just perfect to keep on the table and hopefully encourage the kiddos to keep it cleared off. I'm having fun piecing along with <a href="https://www.elmstreetquilts.com/p/hand-pieced-qal.html" target="_blank">Elm Street Quilts</a> and <a href="https://kristinesser.com/hand-pieced-qal/" target="_blank">Simple Handmade Everyday</a>! I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I decided to make the blocks 12" instead of 6". Takes a little longer, but I'm definitely getting in lots of practice.<br />

My favorite tip from this process so far is using applique pins to pin my blocks together. I've previously used glass-head pins. I like how thin they are, but they do tend to get in the way a little more as I'm stitching down the line. The applique pins are a bit thicker diameter, but they don't get in the way as much. I haven't seen that make a big difference in the finished product, either.<br />

<br /></div>
This year for me is about finishing projects that have been languishing in piles around my sewing room. In addition to participating in the hand piecing quilt along and project quilting (my only two new projects) I am focusing on reducing my piles where projects are carefully set aside when I get squirreled.<br />
<br />

I'm moving a little out of my quilting comfort zone this month. I've had this dress hanging in my sewing room for, well, a very long time. I started it when Sam was in 8th grade. She was in a version of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and was going to use this dress to double as her graduation dress, I think. Anyway--that obviously didn't happen!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ORE-5KXd-K1GEGH8ILR_sH9BN6GuJ6DSGZ2GVfpzegLZZAUJdSaEvsmDUf3MpFHaVe5QL63aDP8Kq3ieoPUm2TYTsqUmKp-qY4hq76jj0ZnJuRtjoZ1m-pdWPQtJ8Nbd50VIegS93rf_/s1600/Dress1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1017" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6ORE-5KXd-K1GEGH8ILR_sH9BN6GuJ6DSGZ2GVfpzegLZZAUJdSaEvsmDUf3MpFHaVe5QL63aDP8Kq3ieoPUm2TYTsqUmKp-qY4hq76jj0ZnJuRtjoZ1m-pdWPQtJ8Nbd50VIegS93rf_/s320/Dress1.jpg" width="203" /></a></div>
<br />
All that is left to be done is to secure the top two rows of gold braid on the yoke and hem the bottom. I think that is doable with everything else going on this month--including two very big swim meets that will take up two of my weekends.<br />

Yay! I finished my January goal. I am absolutely floored with how many little pieces I'm actually dealing with. I mean, I knew. But taking the time to press each one and then seeing them stacked up so neatly really brought it home. It's gonna be quite a task to get it all back together.<br />

<div>
Knowing that most of these fabrics are close to (if not already) a hundred years old means it is not only a slow process taking out all those stitches but also removing all the creases from those seams. I decided to use a muslin pressing cloth to protect the pieces as I pressed them. I did a quick once-over to get the worst of the fold-overs out before sandwiching the unit inside the muslin, then pressed on both sides with the cloth to protect. I'm very happy with how that worked.<br />

<br />
I’ve been looking forward to this quilt along with Elm Street Quilts and Simply Everyday Handmade since they announced it a few weeks ago.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div>
I learned how to hand piece a couple of years ago and I love it! I’m still working on my first sampler quilt—I’ve finished 7 of the blocks so far. I usually only work on them at swim meets or on vacation.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-X3TREqNxOlLKAyt8KjtyX7jjFwxboBxVRoxQRMkSF8FXWvUQ0LOx2ATXj-PdMJLqeqrEBor7FBi51_HmIkyHQO5FKXwZuaEhHCOVfYdIT5mtdrIJzEaNW097ki5FIocD2QAZzoLI-vMR/s1600/HandPieceKit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-X3TREqNxOlLKAyt8KjtyX7jjFwxboBxVRoxQRMkSF8FXWvUQ0LOx2ATXj-PdMJLqeqrEBor7FBi51_HmIkyHQO5FKXwZuaEhHCOVfYdIT5mtdrIJzEaNW097ki5FIocD2QAZzoLI-vMR/s320/HandPieceKit.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But that also means I already have a system that works for me. I keep most of my supplies in one of my drawers, with just the snips, threaded needles and pincushion in a to-go pack.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUe1k6xF0Z6OSNxPaPcSsdS-jfIDNYtbM06qfMZ2nHkonP-JIf2G0eoY8PDPS4eUoVoHBA6k8sLWHgc07CcWmUx7vOy-bLqLACqIKt3rGh5U7M5vt8PyEA-oHHIYk2GWZlf_DGPl8-G6xL/s1600/HandPieces1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1371" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUe1k6xF0Z6OSNxPaPcSsdS-jfIDNYtbM06qfMZ2nHkonP-JIf2G0eoY8PDPS4eUoVoHBA6k8sLWHgc07CcWmUx7vOy-bLqLACqIKt3rGh5U7M5vt8PyEA-oHHIYk2GWZlf_DGPl8-G6xL/s320/HandPieces1.jpg" width="274" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I keep blocks ready-to-go in ziplock bags. After I cut out each piece, I mark the 1/4-inch seams on each edge of the reverse side, label the bag and make any notes for things to remember. When I’m ready to work, I just grab a block bag and my go pack.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfoKlpYaKe4wIPXkfvhNRSGGvwnydP9JOblUrrk4PhWRM8sZy8AhucZ2ykFcSDuZ1Fucy-Lcqr_PKmhbPA8_5ACcAOGjWtfvHKYliULmSWTU0YyjRMhG_ffIDudiHZicSFpm1mm54yslW/s1600/HandPieced2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfoKlpYaKe4wIPXkfvhNRSGGvwnydP9JOblUrrk4PhWRM8sZy8AhucZ2ykFcSDuZ1Fucy-Lcqr_PKmhbPA8_5ACcAOGjWtfvHKYliULmSWTU0YyjRMhG_ffIDudiHZicSFpm1mm54yslW/s320/HandPieced2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So easy and satisfying. I’m always surprised at how quickly units and blocks come together. AND I’m super excited to put in time more regularly and have a top that is completely hand-pieced!<br />

This is how I remember it growing up. I would remain behind a screen except for certain times of day when they'd raise it while playing the national anthem. I remember that reverent feeling--everyone and everything inside the rotunda would stop for a few minutes and everyone would take in the majesty of this huge flag which inspired our national anthem.</div>

I've had this project pinned since I saw it on Moda's blog, and I figure this is the perfect chance to go at it. Again this week I drew from my scrap bins--exclusively. Loving being able to whittle away at those stacks and make something I love.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
I was excited to see the first prompt for this year's <a href="https://kimlapacek.com/project-quilting" target="_blank">Project Quilting</a> challenge. It is one of the few times I've had an idea right away. Last week I went to Los Angeles with Sarah for the annual IMTA Convention. There she competed in several acting and modeling categories hoping to catch the attention of talent managers and agents =) We had so much fun!<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Jw6Dd5Ji_Kp1Oww-GpNWeulYL4RYDbeK3KtV6cAG9hVxmajc4DxKAhVBUTmvbIRWR5pewShJ6nSuFDO2wL3681IWym8top8THR9r26jxofLbLLLebXMFN2-c2ueUsWYvc7x-S_eN4sjt/s1600/IMG_2416.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Jw6Dd5Ji_Kp1Oww-GpNWeulYL4RYDbeK3KtV6cAG9hVxmajc4DxKAhVBUTmvbIRWR5pewShJ6nSuFDO2wL3681IWym8top8THR9r26jxofLbLLLebXMFN2-c2ueUsWYvc7x-S_eN4sjt/s320/IMG_2416.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the way there, I was snoozing on the airplane and she nudged me to look out the window. The colors of the sunrise were breathtaking! I took a picture, but that could hardly do it justice since the cabin was dark. But when I saw this week's prompt, I knew I wanted to work from that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQqDQPBGoWMOLGETZoWKCEjPGgJ5fS3eF92zTBujiNDCxK0B2BFmy8NALjtRKkbxZOYXUUci205jBOW8OKlwQ-WunfQAfMballR2R600v4qDsv13hYsPY2bS3hCfhbUL-nztwK-lBjmjUd/s1600/IMG_7802.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQqDQPBGoWMOLGETZoWKCEjPGgJ5fS3eF92zTBujiNDCxK0B2BFmy8NALjtRKkbxZOYXUUci205jBOW8OKlwQ-WunfQAfMballR2R600v4qDsv13hYsPY2bS3hCfhbUL-nztwK-lBjmjUd/s320/IMG_7802.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also knew that I was losing 3 sewing days on our little adventure, so it had to be a smaller project. I came up with a coupe of ideas and planed to shop on my first day home, but when I went to my scrap bins to see if I had anything I could work with, I found I already had everything I needed--including the zipper. Bonus!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinuedxpDduREVPurswxrvYI5cYkKGFrw0r5hgkaWVwUOWFYlw7ci3FythL88TGHJcnOO7GN2idJo9lceiMOLqW7LSHlLTVvoG27CIe6QaCLedQIpUBwiMDdws3bpsbjUzZcfKhUPO76Gvn/s1600/IMG_7792.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinuedxpDduREVPurswxrvYI5cYkKGFrw0r5hgkaWVwUOWFYlw7ci3FythL88TGHJcnOO7GN2idJo9lceiMOLqW7LSHlLTVvoG27CIe6QaCLedQIpUBwiMDdws3bpsbjUzZcfKhUPO76Gvn/s320/IMG_7792.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So this little bag will remind me of not only of the trip, but how important hopes and dreams are. Sarah had big ones and I'll be running to keep up! I have more simple ones, but it still seems like I'm always struggling to keep moving forward. I love the colors of the sunrise and the simple lines that allude to the morning's first rays. Thanks for inspiring me to dream a little too!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hope is rising!</div>

I'm working on getting back in the saddle this year. I missed my OMG most of last year! The first week of this month I'm out of town with my Sarah, so I really only have 3 weeks to work on this month's focus goal.<br />

One of my ongoing projects is deconstructing these Lonestar sections. They were given to me a couple of summers ago by my grandma. She was cleaning out her cedar chest and found several unfinished projects from her grandmother. No one knows why she didn't finish them. Some are hand-pieced and some are machine pieced. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, when I laid out the pieces of the Lone Star I could see that they were different sizes. The seam allowances are not consistent and the points mostly don't match up, so I decided to deconstruct before doing them over.<br />

This month I will finish deconstructing the second section and press all the pieces from the first two sections.<br />

This month I need to make myself a new purse. I've had this on my want-to-do list for several years now. I made a "sample" when I first bought the Pink Sand Beach Designs "Barbados Bag". I used some black and white fabric and I *loved* the bag! I literally used it till I wore it out.</div>

Well, today my hair is 3 inches shorter and the layers are, well, extreme. Oh well ... Next time I'll be more specific about what I want done. I guess I'll learn to live with it for now.</div>

It's been a while not only since I've posted, but also since I've really focused on my sewing. This year I re-upped for another stint in Stash Bee after taking last year off. I've also made a sort-of master list of projects to focus on this year. For another post ...<br />

This month I REALLY need to finish the quilt I started for my mom for Christmas. It was a collaboration between all us, her daughters. I got it almost done, but the echo quilting is taking A LOT longer than I expected. I'm really proud of this project for many reasons, but one of those is that this is the largest quilt I've quilted on my little machine.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was quite a process, but I'm really pleased with how it is turning out.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just need to finish the echo quilting, mark and stitch the border leaf pattern and bind it. I really need to finish this before I can move on to other projects on my list, so this is my first goal of 2018.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Glad to be back! Linked up <a href="http://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2018/01/one-monthly-goal-january-goal-setting.html" target="_blank">here as #112</a>.</div>

We settled on a handprint quilt. Everyone traced the dominant (writing) hand for each member of their family. My Samantha even fibbed to get Mom, Dad and Grandma's hands without revealing the project.</div>

<div>
More pictures are on my instagram account ( <a href="https://www.instagram.com/areformedheathn/">https://www.instagram.com/areformedheathn/</a>) . I posted them there because I know my mom doesn't (well, didn't) follow me there. This finish will be headed home with Samantha, but in the meantime ...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As per my usual, this project has ended up being a bit bigger than originally thought. But I want Mom to know that this labor of love has deeply touched me. As I've spent time with each hand and the quilting has fallen into place (not as originally planned,) I've felt the influence not only of the hands on the tree, but the roots, too. Pondering and remembering, even allowing myself to let go and trusting myself do make the pictures in my head come to life. Something I'm not really good at, but I am learning.<br />
<br />
My mom has truly been one of the biggest influences in my life. She introduced me to crafting and handwork. Mom leads by example. She is the my rock, my guide, my moral compass, my biggest supporter. Her testimony and ability to see everything in the simplest possible terms remind me to keep focused on things that matter most.<br />
<br />
Sorry this will be a little late, Mom. I love you!</div>
