July OMG

For this month's goal I finally settled on making Sarah's Girl's Camp pillowcase.

Its a tradition that I started with her older sister.  I make a pillowcase decorated with each year's theme on one side and it is plain on the other side for their friends to sign.  It's a keepsake that I love to see them use over and over =)

In our Stake, the theme is kept secret from the girls, so I'm usually coordinating little daily gifts at the last minute.  In the last couple of years I've managed to get the theme from adults who were in the know.  This helps me to get started ahead of time.  I love to plan little gifts for each day and write personal notes.

This year's camp is based on the Lion King.  As I was contemplating little gifts to tuck away for her each day, the song "Circle of Life" kept going through my head.  I auditioned many ideas, but finally settled on playing with the traditional winding ways blocks.  I've long wanted to make a winding ways quilt, so I have templates.  What a perfect way to practice =)

I settled on a design, picked colors to match Sara's room, and now I've got 180 pieces to cut out and piece back together (and that's just one side.)  I'm excited about the colors--they're a bit out of my ordinary--but they are striking.

Oh, well ... I guess I just can't get enough of those curves.  I've made this block hand-stitching, but now to master the machine curves ...

  3. Heather, you must be talking about Girls Camp. I feel like I am the queen of girls camp as I have been for over 15 years besides doing it my six years as a youth. For some reason I have spent many years being a part of young womens in some form or another just in time for girls camp. I will miss this year though because my daughter is expecting that week. I am ready for a girls camp break anyway.

I CAN'T BELIEVE you chose winding ways to make all those pillowcases. Did I gather correctly that you are making one for each girl? That should be enough blocks for one whole quilt. I do love that it fits your circle of life theme!

I wish you well on your journey for this project! At least they are not quilted.
